Most important job motor: the hospitality in the United Kingdom becomes one of the most important economic sectors;
Hotel construction on the British island in flourishing – 185 new properties with more than 29,000 rooms in the pipeline.
Every ten days another hotel opens its doors and generates several new jobs. According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the worldwide leading provider of global b2b hotel data, currently 184 hotel construction projects with more than 29,900 rooms are in the pipeline in the United Kingdom. The hospitality's boom is steady: in the past ten years about 100,000 new rooms were added to the hotel market.
A new landmark for the luxury hospitality is the new Shangri-La Hotel in London (
right below): the high end hotel located in the 306 meter high tower "The Shard" will open its doors at the beginning of May. The hotel's 202 rooms and suites will range up to the 50th floor of the tower and offer a panoramic view over the metropolis. It is the third property of the luxury brand from Hongkong: 2010 a Shangri-La was opened in Paris and last year a second one opened in Istanbul.
The tourism market in growing: last year guests spent about 133 billion British pounds, with 24 billion pounds being spent from foreign visitors – and counting. Just 153,000 new jobs were added to the hospitality segment in the last two years, now there are more than 2,68 million jobs in total, and therefore it is the fourth largest economic sector in the UK.
Large new building projects for example Center Parcs in Flitwick/Bedfordshire are getting more and more attention. Center-Parcs' owner Blackstone invests about 250 million pounds into the leisure park, which is expecting about 350,000 guests. Nearby such leisure parks new hotels are constantly arising as for example at the Legoland in Windsor or at the "Chessington World of Adventures" in Surry.
A newcomer in the British hotel market is the German low-budget design hotel chain Motel One. Two new hotels – design hotel rooms for flat rates – will open this year. A 222 room property in Newcastle will open its doors in April and a 258 room
hotel will begin its operation in October in London. So far Motel One's one and only property in the United Kingdom is located in Edinburgh, a second one will shortly open in Scotland.
Market maker Whitbread is currently planning twelve new hotel of its famous budget hotel brand Premier Inn with more than 1,800 rooms until early 2016. Also the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) currently has ten new hotels in the pipeline, among them four new properties by its boutique brand Indigo with a total number of 349 rooms.
