Egypt has moved a step closer to a total ban on alcohol when Mohamed Morsi's government said it will no longer give licences to sell alcohol in some areas.
Announcing the move, Nabil Abbas, vice-president of the New Urban Communities Authority, said: "We cannot allow stores spreading debauchery in our society."
Although the ban is not likely to affect any key holiday destinations – particularly Red Sea resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh – it has raised fears that the growing conservative mood of government could soon prevent tourists from having access to any alcohol.
