Wotif revealed Aussie domestic travellers' favourite destinations for 2009, according to the top 20 locations booked through the leading online accommodation website.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast held their respective spots at the top in 2009, with Canberra sneaking up to 5th spot from 11th the year before.
Queensland and New South Wales were the states most represented in the top 20 with six destinations in Queensland and seven in New South Wales. This was followed two destinations in Tasmania and one in Victoria, ACT, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Mackay in Queensland was one of the biggest movers, going from 28th place in 2008 to 19th on the list for 2009.
Wotif.com General Manager Brand Megan Magill said that despite the economic downturn hitting headlines over the past 12 months, Wotif.com saw strong growth during 2009.
"The top destinations across Australia are traditionally capital cities, and that hasn't changed much this year. But we have seen some really solid growth, particularly on the Gold Coast and some regional centres across the country which is great."
"We now have over 16,000 accommodation providers listed on our site from 55 countries and receive around 230,000 bookings a month."
"We're expecting this growth to continue throughout 2010."
