Don't call tourism names! keep it "GOOD".

Should sustainable tourism, ecotourism, responsible tourism and other well-intentioned nomenclatures and movements join together under the one umbrella 'GOOD tourism'?.

Inspired by the late Robbie Collins (pictured), who was a significant contributor to PATA and heritage conservation in the 1980s and 1990s, Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Renton de Alwis initiated a discussion thread on PATA's Sustainable Tourism Wiki wherein he quotes Mr Collins:-

"Please don't call Tourism NAMES ... for all tourism must be sustainable, conserve the resources it utilizes, be eco-friendly ... all tourism must benefit communities and all its stakeholders, all tourism must negate social ills and enhance nature, culture and heritage ... all tourism must be good business and must profit all alike. If you MUST call tourism a name, please call it GOOD tourism."

Weighing into the discussion, high-profile industry personalities Tunku Iskander, Russell Johnson, Anna Pollock, and Mandip Singh Soin, have all backed Mr de Alwis' suggestion.

Ms Pollock wrote: "This is the crux of the matter. Unless mainstream tourism adopts a truly sustainable mindset, our tourism community will make little or no contribution to the challenges we face living within the natural limits associated with our host environment."

"Let's keep it simple and real," agreed Tunku Iskander. ""GOOD Tourism" is especially appropriate in today's cluttered, chronic and complicated world."

And the world is increasingly concerned about climate change. The second annual Synovate and BBC World News survey of more 18,000 people across 22 nations shows that more people are concerned about climate change (72% across the globe).

Further, the study found that more people are actually doing something about it. "People are changing their behaviour in a dramatic fashion and the past year has taken all-things-green mainstream," says Synovate.
