World Cup, German hoteliers satisfied.
Thursday, 20th July 2006
Source : The HotelBenchmark™ Survey
Poll reveals 70% of German hoteliers were satisfied with their hotel's performance, during the World Cup.

With hopes high across Germany in the run up to the World Cup, we surveyed German hoteliers to discover if the tournament lived up to their expectations in terms of its impact on hotel performance.

The findings:

  • The majority of German hoteliers (70%) were either very satisfied or satisfied with their hotel's performance during the World Cup, compared with 29% being dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.
  • 57% felt the World Cup didn't live up to their expectations in terms of impact on hotel performance.
  • An overwhelming 88% saw average room rate improvements
  • While 54% saw no improvements in occupancy
  • 76% believe hosting the World Cup will have a positive long-term impact on the German hotel industry
It was a widely held view that World Cup had a negative impact on conference business, which explains the 3% fall in occupancy during June. Conferences were postponed to before or after the event or not held at all this year. For many hotels, this appears to have had a negative impact on food and beverage revenues.

The return of 1m rooms by FIFA in April 2006 was viewed as a significant blow to the industry. The majority of hoteliers agreed that they were only fully booked on the match days – as fewer than expected fans decided to stay on for additional nights.

Despite this, many hoteliers believe the World Cup has been successful in generating a very positive perception of Germany amongst international visitors which will help the country attract more tourists in years to come.

The HotelBenchmark Survey contains the largest independent source of hotel performance data outside of North America and tracks the performance of over 6,500 hotels and 1.2 million rooms every month. Monthly surveys are produced on the following areas:

  • Four regional rate and occupancy surveys covering Asia-Pacific, Europe, Central & South America and the Middle East & Africa.
  • Twelve country/sub region rate and occupancy surveys for Australia, Benelux, China, Germany, India, Italy, New Zealand, Nordic Countries, Qatar, Southern Africa, Spain and UK.
  • Two city rate and occupancy surveys for London and Paris.
  • Monthly profitability surveys on Germany and London.
  • On an annual basis we produce profitability surveys tracking performance across all regions of the world.
  • Daily HotelBenchmark? tracks rate and occupancy everyday for a number of markets across the Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Coverage continues to build rapidly since launch in 2005.
