With the world's largest display of traditional rice dumplings, on the concluding day of the Sweets Surprises, the second theme week of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS-2005) Dubai successfully created a world record on 6th July 2005.The much-awaited event was held at the Modhesh Fun City (Dubai World Trade Centre Hall Number 2).
The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) – organizers of the Sweets Surprises for the third successive year –joined hands with Emirates Refining Company, Intercontinental Hotel Dubai and Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG) prepare and distribute 23094 Chinese Deep-Fried Rice Dumplings to beat the previous world record set in Singapore in 1992 with 13,192 pieces.
Ms. Shaikha Al Mutawa, Chairperson of Sweets Surprises Organizing Committee at DTCM, said: "For the first time, we succeeded in creating two Guinness World Records in the Sweets Surprises theme week. These events reflect Dubai's stature as the melting pot of culture and its determination to beat the world through human endeavor, innovation and creativity. The other record was for the world's biggest chocolate box filled with bars. The box weighed 1700 kilograms and was filled with 35,136 chocolate bars."
The ECG President and Regional Executive Chef of Intercontinental Hotel Dubai, Mr. Uwe Micheel, led the teams of Chefs who made the traditional Chinese dumplings made out of glutinous rice. The ingredients that went into the record dish included 280 Kgs f rice flour, 112 kgs wheat starch, 130 litres milk, 48 kgs sugar, 23 kgs coconut powder, 300 litres sunflower oil, 38 kgs bread crumbs and 1450 eggs.
The team comprised of 53 Intercontinental Hotel Dubai chefs, including 11 Chinese chefs working with this five-star hotel. A big turn out of 7000 to 8000 people from different nationalities and age groups made the event memorable.
Dubai has to its credit a number of world records, including the Largest Cake weighing 74.533 kg, the Biggest Bowl of Spaghetti weighing 703.4 kg and the Biggest Chicken Biryani weighing 1885.4 kg – all done under the DTCM aegis.
