An increase in the amount of ash, smoke and general activity from Mount Agung volcano in Bali has led authorities to close Denpasar International Airport.
The airport, the main gateway to one of the region's most popular tourist destinations, closed this morning (27 November 2017) and will remain closed until at least 07:00 on 28 November 2017 and most likely until further notice, depending on how the situation with the volcano develops.
All arriving and departing flights have been cancelled. Authorities are monitoring the situation and travellers affected by the airport closure - both incoming and outgoing - should contact their airline and hotel directly.
Indonesia's national disaster agency said on Monday (Nov 27) that the exclusion zone around the volcano, which is 75km from Bali's tourist hub of Kuta, has been widened to 10km, with people living in the zone being urged to evacuate.
According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin, Australia, there is "ash confirmed on the ground" at Denpasar airport as well as ash at FL300 (which refers to flight level at 30,000 feet) in the vicinity of the volcano.
