Google has never had a first-mover advantage, but Google has always been able to come on top and smash all of its competitors who had enjoyed first-mover advantage.
- Google was not the first search engine. Actually it was late to enter the market. Yahoo dominated the market. When Google launched, even Dogpile was a more popular search engine than Google. Then Google came and it crushed all search engine competitors - all 150 of them.
- Google was late to launch its own Internet browser. Microsoft controlled 85% of the market with its Internet Explorer. Google launched its Chrome browser and literally obliterated the competition.
- Google was not the first to come up with an email service. Actually, it was late to the game. Then gmail came and Google eliminated the opposition.
- Google was not the first to come with office productivity tools like Microsoft Office. Then Google launched its G Suite (Google Workspace) and stole 50% of the market.
- Google was late to launch a mobile operating system. Nokia and its proprietary OS dominated the market. Windows Mobile OS was a major player. Then Google launched its Android OS and literally killed the competition.
- Google was not the first to launch a generative AI powered search application. ChatGPT took the market by storm. When Google launches its generative AI powered search engine and other generative AI applications in 2023 (Project Magi) it will crush the competition.
What is Google’s Magi Project?
The New York Times reported that Google’s Magi generative AI project would add new generative AI features to Google Search, while keeping ads in the mix of search results. Search queries that lead to any type of a shopping opportunity, such as buying shoes or booking a hotel will continue to feature ads (Google Ads, Google Product Ads or Google Hotel Ads) on the SERPs (Search Engibe Results Pages).
The generative AI-powered Google Search will be conversational in format and will offer “lists of preselected options for objects to buy, information to research and other information”.
Project Magi includes priority work on several generative AI applications for search, images, productivity tools, etc. that will be launched in 2023, starting with the U.S. market.
