3 Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Own Career
By Jerry McConway
Thursday, 16th May 2019

If you get far enough in your career, and you have had a chance to fully settle into your field, you might eventually start asking yourself questions about your current job in the hospitality industry: More specifically, you may have reached that time in your career when you need to ask yourself, if not one of them, all three of the following questions.

  1. Is my current job compensating me fairly? Am I making more than my colleagues and peers, as much as them, or less than them?
  2. What do I really know about the culture of this company? When interviewing, it is imperative to know and understand the culture you will be joining.
  3. Have I correctly mapped my career out? If not, what can I do to better strategize?

These questions are legitimate ones, and they are worth answering honestly and thoroughly. In the end, one of the best ways for you to find real answers for these questions is contacting a great hospitality recruiter whose specialty is right in your wheelhouse. With JDI, you will find a recruiter who knows the hospitality and hotel industries inside and out.

We perform salary surveys every year to ensure we understand the compensation for Directors, Vice Presidents, as well as General Managers at the hotel level. When we research compensation, we investigate base salaries in addition to stock and bonus options, thereby giving you the best chance of knowing where you stand in terms of compensation when compared with your peers.

When it comes to understanding and appreciating the company culture, working with JDI will give you a leg up on your competitors for a position, as we are very familiar with the culture of the companies with which we work. In most cases, you will receive descriptions of real-life scenarios about promotions, company culture, and turnover. All of this can provide you with a close picture of what a company culture would look like if you had to interview confidentially.

Now, your final question—how can you tell if you have mapped your career out correctly? At JDI, we profile literally thousands of hotel executives, and we see individuals who quickly get to the places they are trying to go while others end up spending their entire careers trying to get to the same place. It is important that you map your career out strategically in order to avoid the regular pitfalls and go to the places in your career that you hope to get to quickly, and we can help you figure out the path that will get you there.
