FORECASTING THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL
MasterCard and PATA have joined to announce the "MasterIndex of Travel for Asia Pacific". The MasterIndex will reveal the latest forecasts for travel for the second half of 2003 for 12 international markets in Pacific Asia. MasterCard and PATA will introduce the MasterIndex to journalists and travel industry leaders at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand on the evening of July 24 and at the Regent Hotel in Singapore on the morning of July 29. The findings are relevant to business leaders involved in travel, hospitality, retail, and other lifestyle-related sectors. The speakers at both events will be Dr. Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, Economic Advisor, Asia Pacific, MasterCard International and Mr. John Koldowski, Managing Director, PATA Strategic Intelligence Centre. PATA BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO MEET DURING TRAVEL MART

NEW ERA FOR JAPAN CHAPTER
Japan Airlines Executive Officer, Mr. Nobutaka Ishikure, has been appointed Chairman of the PATA Japan Chapter. The PATA Japan Chapter Secretariat has moved from the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) to Marketing Garden, an international public relations firm specialising in travel. Mr. Ishikure said: "By transferring the secretariat to Marketing Garden we will be able to re-energise PATA Japan Chapter's activities." 'SEE YOU' AND PHOENIX: TOGETHER APART
Project Phoenix is PATA's new global public relations campaign aiming to restore consumer confidence in travel to Pacific Asia. See You in Pacific Asia is PATA's existing integrated marketing programme that aims to convert Phoenix-generated consumer confidence into travel bookings. Unlike Project Phoenix, which will rise and fall as consumer sentiment warrants, See You in Pacific Asia is an on-going campaign to promote Pacific Asia's travel products in the North American market. MART BUYERS SHOULD VISIT THE JUNCTION
PATA and TravelWeekly have unveiled the TravelWeekly PTM 2003 Junction. The online Junction acts as a showroom for all PTM03 product sellers. Travel buyers, travel operators and media can check the Junction to find out who is exhibiting what at PATA Travel Mart 2003. Registered sellers, their telephone numbers and Web site details are automatically listed by business category. Buyers can log into the Junction to read seller profiles and send them e-mails via the host engine's message centre. OAG TO HOLD SEMINAR AT PATA TRAVEL MART 2003
Flight information specialist OAG will hold a corporate travel seminar during PATA Travel Mart 2003 on Friday October 3, at 1100. The seminar will update corporate travel planners on the latest corporate travel trends and practices. After the seminar, many attendees will visit the Mart to meet sellers. WORK UNDERWAY ON FREE FORECASTS UPDATE
Purchasers of PATA's Pacific Asia Tourism Forecasts 2003-2005 will receive updated forecasts free of charge by the end of September. While PATA anticipated and made allowance for the conflict in Iraq, the onset of SARS was not figured in. Work is currently underway on updates that will include the effects of SARS on travel. DESTINATION JEJU 2004
The 53rd PATA Annual Conference will take place on Jeju, Korea (ROK), April 18-22, 2004. The rugged island in the Korean Straits midway between the Korean and Japanese coasts is known as a honeymoon destination for Korean couples.
** According to legend, three demi-gods emerged from Moheung-hyeol, which was on the northern slopes of Mt. Halla. The three deities became the progenitors of the Jeju people who founded the Kingdom of Tamna.
** Jeju's total land area is 1,845 square kilometres, of which 50 percent is forested and 30 percent is arable. More than half of Jeju's 539,493 people live in the provincial capital, Jeju-Si.
** Jeju's population enjoyed per capita income of about US$9,000 in 1999, more than 10 times higher than it was in 1980. Income from tourism grew to nearly 40 times 1980 levels over the same 19-year period.
** Jeju provincial government has a highly informative Web site at http://210.104.87.69/n_eng/Jeju_Main/menu/index.asp. The site includes weather and exchange tables, an embedded multimedia profile of Jeju, insights into the villages of the island, natural history and folklore. Numerous other aspects of life in Jeju including the Jeju International Convention Centre (the Conference venue) are illustrated.

PATA STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE CENTRE WORLDWATCH
** Kenya Airways will inaugurate direct flights from Nairobi to Bangkok and Hong Kong on September 3. These flights will be operated three times a week using a Boeing 767-300ER.
** Air capacity between North America and India are being boosted with additional services by Air India, non-stop Toronto-Delhi services by Air Canada (starting October 26), and daily non-stop Newark-Delhi services by Continental Airlines, due in October.
** Qantas Airways will soon resume the following services: daily Melbourne-Sydney-Hong Kong, three-times-a-week Perth-Singapore-Paris, daily Melbourne-Tokyo and daily Brisbane-Cairns-Tokyo.
