The T+L 500 results are based upon the 2009 World's Best Awards survey, in which Travel + Leisure subscribers evaluated hotels on five characteristics: rooms and facilities, location, service, restaurants and food, and value.  The publication calculated the average rating of each characteristic and tabulated each property's overall score.

The Gold List results are based upon the 2009 Readers' Choice Survey, in which the publication asked respondents to rate hotels according to criteria such as service, rooms, design, dining and location.  From more than 25,000 responses received, the publication calculated the average score of each category and tabulated the overall satisfaction percentage.
