In order to revitalise tourism in Tibet, China, the Chinese authorities have introduced a new campaign to attract approximately three million tourists to Tibet in 2009 through trimming travel and hotel costs.
Hotel levies and train fares between Beijing and Lhasa have been reduced by up to 70% and 80%, respectively.
Due to political unrest and riots in 2008, Tibet's tourist arrivals and tourism receipts declined significantly by 69% and 72%, respectively, in the first half of 2008, compared to 2007 in which the local government earned approximately US$702 million.
