On World Environment Day guests were asked to have a greater awareness of environmental issues when they stayed in Australian hotels.
On World Environment Day the AHA's call is designed to further enhance the green credentials of the hotel industry.
"Most, if not all, accommodation hotels in Australia have many policies and procedures in place that are environmentally friendly," said the AHA's Manager – National Accommodation Division, Hamish Arthur.
"Numerous hotels have signed up to programs that help them reduce their carbon footprint and it's very rare to find a hotel that doesn't give guests the option of not having their linen changed every day.
"Many properties also utilise water-saving devices. But for all the work that hotels are doing in this important area, it would make a huge difference if guests could do their bit for the environment as well."
As a result, the AHA wants all people staying in hotels on World Environment Day – and beyond – to recognise how they can help our industry to become even "greener".
"When guests check into hotels, they shouldn't leave their environmentally-friendly attitudes at the reception desk," Mr Arthur said.
"Simple things like turning off the lights and television when they leave their room and not having a bath, but rather a four-minute shower would assist the industry and the environment in general.
"The AHA's call underlines the commitment of Australia's accommodation hotels to operating sustainable businesses."
