Grape stomping heralds coming of WFA.
Monday, 1st October 2007
Source : Wine for Asia 2007
The Great Grape Stomp is being held this time in a nature reserve with historical relics from World War II, and women representing of wine-growing countries will don national attire and stomp on grapes at Labrador Park, amidst lush greenery and against the backdrop of a gun that dates back to 1938.

Labrador Park was the site of an old British fort, the Fort Pasir Panjang located on a hill and cliff next to the sea. The place, located off Pasir Panjang Road, was gazetted as a Nature Reserve in November 2001. Nearby are two historical tunnels and media will be taken on a tour of one of them. Wine for Asia 2007 is organised jointly by Singex Exhibitions and Wine Resources.

The Great Grape Stomp is a competition among wine-producing countries – representatives of the countries compete in a friendly and sporting spirit by stomping on grapes placed in tubs. The winner is the stomper whose grape juice/pulp is first to reach a marked line on glass canisters placed at the base of the tubs.

Grape Stomping (Pigeage in French) is a tradition that dates back to the era when grapes were stomped on to submerge the skins and grape pulp so that the skin imparted its colouring to the juice. The process also helped to increase the extract from the grapes. The Great Grape Stomp aims to reflect that there is much culture, fun, excitement and friendship in a simple bottle of wine.

The winning country will be given the privilege to display a "Great Grape Stomp Champion" trophy at WFA 2007, and a special space to brand itself at the wine tasting area, as well as a complimentary table for embassy representatives at the Gala Wine Style Awards Dinner.

Wine for Asia 2007, the fifth in the series and Asia's most comprehensive wine exhibition will occupy an area of 8,000 sqm and expects to receive more than 4,000 trade professionals from 21 countries. Pre-registered trade visitors and invited guests will be given free admission. A fee of $25 will be charged for on-site registration.

About 58,000 wine bottles are expected to be showcased at WFA 2007. Visitors will also have an opportunity to taste winning wines from the Decanter World Wine Awards 2007 and the Wine for Asia's very own Wine Style Asia Award 2007. Wine Style Asia Award is the mark of quality wine destined for the Asian market. The winning wines are selected by 2 panels of judges comprising mainly Asian judges. The first round of judging will be on 16 October and the final round on 22 October.

There will also be a symposium on "Asia Market – Cork or Screw Cap?" on 25 October from 2-3.30 pm and a forum on "Capitalising on wine to increase the bottom line of traditional dining business."
