The announcement follows the opening of five other hotels in the region, including the brand-new Hotel Ben Marsalforn Affiliated by Meliá, in November 2025.
Meliá Hotels International, one of the world's leading hospitality groups, has announced an ambitious expansion into Malta and Gozo with nine new hotels set to open across the islands over the next three years.
Developed in partnership with Agius Group through its hospitality arm, Blue Clay Collection, the project will significantly strengthen Malta's tourism offering - a destination with a fast-growing reputation for luxury travel in Europe.
Every property is designed to reflect the identity of its local community, from the restoration of a historic residence in the capital Valletta to the transformation of an antique townhouse in Victoria, the main town on Gozo. Malta's quieter and greener sister island, Gozo is a Mediterranean gem celebrated for its slow pace of life, striking landscapes, and deep cultural roots.
The portfolio will be a mix of properties: The Meliá Collection, INNSiDE by Meliá, Affiliated by Meliá, and Meliá Hotels and Resorts. The announcement comes after the opening of Hotel Ben Marsalforn Affiliated by Meliá, in November 2025. This Gozo property is just a short stroll from the promenade, the beach and restaurants, and features a heated pool and a rooftop sun terrace with panoramic views of Marsalforn Bay.
The Meliá Collection offers boutique properties designed to capture the true spirit of a destination through their own distinct narrative, and new locations include Malta's UNESCO World Heritage capital, Valletta. On Gozo, the brand is set to open 2 hotels in the main town of Victoria, as well as in the traditional village of San Lawrenz on the north-western edge. These hotels will fortify the island's growing status as a vibrant hub of culture and curated luxury.
The Affiliated by Meliá brand allows unique independent hotels in characterful towns and villages on Gozo - such as Għarb, Qala, and Ghajnsielem - to join the network. Each of the Gozo openings offers an intimate stay, immersing guests in the island's vibrant village life, year-round festivals, hiking trails and world-class diving.
INNSiDE by Meliá hotels are designed with modern travellers blending business and leisure in mind, offering social spaces, a creative energy and minimalist interiors. In spring 2026, INNSiDE is set to arrive in Buggiba, a lively area on the shores of St. Paul's Bay in northern Malta. A 300-room Meliá Hotels & Resorts property will open in St. Julian's - a bustling town on Malta's eastern coast and another popular tourist destination. As the group's flagship brand, these hotels represent the heart of Meliá: exceptional service and warm Spanish hospitality.
“Malta and Gozo are destinations with extraordinary qualities that align perfectly with our brand values. This expansion underscores our ambition to consolidate our position as the leading resort company in the Mediterranean and exemplifies our commitment to growth through strategic local partnerships" said Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman & CEO of Meliá Hotels International.
“As well as the islands' Mediterranean culture, natural beauty and deep heritage, we are particularly drawn to the authenticity of these towns and villages, where travellers can experience a slower, more meaningful style of travel. Through our partnership with Agius Group, we look forward to creating character-rich hotels that celebrate local identity while delivering the elevated guest experience Meliá is known for globally."
A spokesperson for Agius Group said: “Our vision is to give new life to Malta's town and village centres by investing in high-quality boutique hotels that respect their heritage while bringing international standards. Partnering with Meliá, a brand synonymous with excellence, allows us to align Malta with one of the most prestigious names in global hospitality."
Several properties will also incorporate dedicated conference and events facilities, supporting the islands' expanding MICE sector.
