An inconvenient but nevertheless inevitable topic, the sexual abuse of children by tourists, has been a problem hounding many of Asia's popular tourist destinations for a long time.
Recently, the number of incidents has shrunk significantly according to Father Shay Cullen from the children protection center PREDA in the Philippines. During his presentation at ITB Berlin. Cullen described how the PREDA foundation was fighting against all kinds of huma exploitation, especially child prostitution.
Father Cullen emphasized that this kind of crime was without borders and affects not just the coutries where the offence occurs but the country of origin of offender likewise. "After their return journey these people become a threat to the children in their own neighbourhood." stated Cullen.
As a result of pressure from Father Cullen and his associates, a number of tour operators are instituting better training of their service staff. "The travel industry should be more aware of the problem" concluded Cullen. |
