What's the Most 'Borrowed' Hotel Amenity?

Exclusive Feature: Ok, time to fess up -- what's the one item you always 'carry-out' of your hotel room?

Toiletries? Slippers? Maybe a laundry bag or those fresh-scented saches hanging in the hotel room closet?

Hotels place careful emphasis on what amenities go into guest rooms, but are guests really paying attention?

TripAdvisor, an online travel community site, surveyed its travelers as well as hoteliers to get a sense of what goes missing from rooms, and the results might surprise you.

While travelers are quick to admit they take toiletries and tea or coffee from hotel rooms, hoteliers claim its the towels and clothes hangers that often go missing. According to the survey, however, its the complimentary bath amenities that appease your hotel guests the most.

But what would guests really like? It's no surprise that guests would prefer complimentary amenities - like WiFi and free parking - above anything else. The survey showed that the demand for these two items is expected to grow over 80% in 2014, so take note hotels.

Of course, it's not just about what's offered in the room that makes a comfortable stay. Today's travelers are seeking more cultural experiences from their hotel. The TripAdvisor survey revealed the following:

Globally, travelers want to embrace adventure by:
  • Exploring another culture 38%
  • Experiencing something specific to the destination 30%
  • Exploring new food 20%
  • Offering TV or film choices in my language 31%
  • Offering food from my home country 27%
What can hotels do to appease these growing demands? We know not every hotel can offer free WiFi, but consider offering parking perks, free valet, complimentary coffee or tea, or even special Internet discounts for your loyalty guests. When you rotate your menus out each season, try and offer a few international options. You might also consider creating a few spa services that appease your international guests, such as using scents or techniques specific to a region.

Lastly, don't worry so much about the in-room amenities. If a few batteries go missing from the TV remote control or there's one less hanger in the closet, it's not the end of the world. While we certainly wouldn't condone this, you can't control the habits -- good or bad -- of every guest that checks into your hotel. What you can do, however, is entice them to make smart decisions!
