Digesting the Food Safety Modernization Act.
By Deloitte
Wednesday, 21st March 2012

Recent cases of contaminated food products and widespread recalls have resulted in a growing awareness of, and concern for, the foods that reach America's tables.

As a result, food safety has become a critical area of concern for consumers, government regulators, and the companies whose success depends on consumer confidence.

With the passing of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (the Act) in December 2010, companies at every point of the food chain must respond to sweeping changes and new food safety regulations -- some that will be implemented quickly and some that will be introduced over the next two years.

It is imperative that businesses understand how new requirements align with existing laws and standards. The passage of this legislation provides companies the opportunity to review their current food safety strategy determining the best approach for building a food safety program that supports the upcoming compliance requirements and regulatory changes.

Deloitte's food safety practice has developed a series of papers focused on the major provisions of the Act, providing insights from experienced professionals to help companies address the needs of dynamic food safety programs and prepare for the changing food safety landscape.
