Hong Kong is a city of constant evolvement, full of energy and consistently reinventing itself while retaining its unique and mystifying sense of place along China's coastline.
Over the past decade, Hong Kong hotels have emerged offering bigger, better and higher alternatives to its predecessors, making Hong Kong a top destination for business and leisure travelers.
Over the next few weeks, I'll bring 4Hoteliers.com readers insights from some of my favorite hotels in Hong Kong, including the soon to be open Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, the highest hotel in the world.
Our first stop: Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View.
Located in the Wanchai district of Hong Kong, next to the Convention Centre and only a few short steps to the Star Ferry, the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View is an easy choice for travelers hosting meetings and events, or needing quick access to Kowloon.
It's location outside of Central Hong Kong makes the hotel a bit quieter and away from the hustle and bustle of the late Hong Kong nights, but it's what is inside the hotel that really counts.
On any given night, the lobby lounge is packed with guests and visitors enjoying a cocktail, listening to music and catching up on conversation. The hotel's Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant, Dynasty, serves some of the best barbecue pork ribs I've ever tasted, and the view from the Club Lounge on the 41st floor is hard to beat, but it's the hotel's renovations that will really make this a hotel hot-spot.
The hotel completed its phase one of renovation back in 2008, which covered some of the guestrooms, Cafe Renaissance, the Lobby Lounge and the upper and lower lobby floors. The hotel is currently in phase two of its renovations, which include the rest of the guestrooms (929 in total), converting the two function rooms on the eighth floor to one pillar-less function space which can accommodate over 500 people for a banquet setting.
This phase of renovations (which I can tell you with certainty won't affect your stay here, as I didn't hear one sound of construction during my three-day stay at the hotel) is aimed for completion by August 2011.
In addition to the guest rooms and function space, the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View will convert its entire top floor to a Club Lounge and will introduce a new restaurant on the 11th floor with views overlooking the Victoria Harbour.
The fitness center, which is currently closed for renovation, will reopen as a fully equipped Health Club and Spa and a rooftop wine bar will be open for guests and private functions.
