At the end of last year, we talked about how small hoteliers can use Twitter and Facebook, maybe you took on board some of those tips, or maybe you didn't. (
see link on the right)
But I want to suggest to you another reason to pop on over to Twitter – to join one of the many "Twitter chats" that have become all the rage lately.
What is a Twitter ChatA twitter chat is just basically where a bunch of people agree to get together at a certain time and discuss a topic. The chats are usually informally organized, and participants join in by just adding on a specific hashtag to their messages.
You'll have to experiment with your own Twitter clients to find a good one to follow the hashtag as well as listen in – I'm still looking for a good one myself. Tweetgrid tweetgrid.com/ is ok, but I won't lie – it's not perfect.
Why Join a Twitter ChatWell, these chats might just sound like a waste of time, but I think there is some good value for hoteliers.
For example:
- You can mix and mingle with other like-minded travel folk.
- The chats often have travel bloggers and journalist who have a wide sphere of influence. If you're looking for new folk to follow and connect with, you'll find them here.
- It's another chance to hear what people are talking about. Is there a trend you weren't aware of? Perhaps you'll get inspired by a new idea.
Suggested ChatsHere are a couple of chats you should check out – make a note in your diary now so you don't miss them. (They're mostly US-focused so bad news for you if you're in a far off timezone.)
#TNI – Stands for traveler's night in. Talk about consumer travel issues and experiences – lots of good media folk. Held Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 ET.
#TourismChat – Discussion of industry issues; popular with CVBs and DMOs. Held every other Thursday 2pm CT.
#BlogChat – Discussion about blogging and social media principles. Sunday nights from 8-9pm CT.
There are lots of them popping up all over. If you can't find a topic or timeslot convenient for you, why not start your own? All you need is a few followers an a unique hashtag.
