We had recently a bit of a scoop on the Savoy's latest estimated opening date, thanks to our attendance of a presentation by the chief architect of the renovation, Mr Conrad Smith of Reardon Smith.

In the same presentation, Mr Smith also provided intriguing detail on what we can expect from this newly-polished Art Deco jewel once it re-opens.

In fact, he supplied both a blow-by-blow account of the refurbishment and a comprehensive history of the building.  And with the project nearing completion, it seems that the Savoy is on the cusp of a stirring comeback.

Here are some key highlights to further whet your appetite:

The building structure is completely updated, with a modern 21st century sprinkler system as well as hi-tech air conditioning and facilities.

The flagship riverfront suites have been individually restored with an eye to the past.  Original pieces have been re-used where possible and everything is guided by the original Savoy designs (which were somewhat diluted throughout the hotel's previous life).  Parquet floors have been introduced.  Large windows, fireplaces and other individually-restored items have been added and the river views are given absolute pride of place.

Imposing bathrooms are now a showcase feature.  Lots of modern accoutrements are being added while the symbolic large showerheads and other classic Savoy touches like wood panels and marble are retained.

The public areas aim to revive the Savoy's golden era by recreating the glamour of the Art Deco surroundings.  Soft furnishings and decorations now come in lighter shades – replacing some of the more garish colour schemes which had evolved in the hotel's previous incarnations.

The Thames Foyer (which had become rather gloomy over the years) has been totally revitalised by a magnificent glass dome which brings natural light flooding in.  It is also being enhanced by a winter garden to further reinforce its standing as the perfect setting for afternoon tea.

The Beaufort Bar will have an uncompromising Art Deco style, while the famous American Bar will hark back to its heyday with a more contemporary feel; all original pictures will go back exactly where they were, to give returning bar regulars an immediate sense of familiarity.

The Main Foyer and Reception will be in softer colours and adorned with finely-crafted details, with all pieces individually hand-crafted.  There's a new black and white marble floor – just like the one at its competitive sister Claridge's, which it is no doubt designed to outshine!

All guest rooms have been individually updated (not just the suites) both "under the hood" in terms of modern systems as well as in their aesthetic look and feel.  The size of finished accommodation at the hotel will range from about 28 to around 70 square metres.

It's mouthwatering stuff: London and the world wait with baited breath!
