Leadership Failure - Three Key Symptoms.
By Rick Johnson
Saturday, 24th September 2011

The 'fish stinks from the head down' is a popualr saying, and very true; this article highlight three key symptoms of poor leaders and managers - some shoot from the hip while others think they have all the answers, without listening.

Unsuccessful Leaders have a "private empire" mentality.

They begin to behave as if they own their companies, and they begin to act as if they have the right to do anything they want with the company without regard for security, longevity or the employees. Successful Leaders try to shape the future precisely because they know that they can't dominate the environment. They know that no matter how successful they've been in the past, they're at the mercy of changing circumstances. They realize they must become good at managing change.

Poor leaders who shoot from the hip tend to settle issues so quickly that they have no opportunity to grasp the ramifications. Worse, because these leaders need to feel that they have all the answers, they have no way to learn new answers.

Unsuccessful Leaders believe that anyone who doesn't rally to their cause is undermining the vision.

Hesitant managers have a choice: Get with the plan, or leave. CEOs become so enamored with their vision of what they want to achieve that they overlook or underestimate the difficulty of actually getting there. Their failure to listen is caused by the "EGO BLOCK."

Effective Leaders understand that their job is to instill a belief in their vision and believe that it is their job to get employees to buy into it without autocratic demands or ultimatums.

Unsuccessful Leaders on their way to becoming absolute failures accelerate their company's decline by reverting to what they regard as tried-and-true methods.

In their desire to make the most of what they regard as their core strengths, they cling to a static business model. They are not supportive of positive change. They often go into a panic response mode and actually create or accelerate a death spiral which almost guarantees the failure of the company.

Effective Leaders create change, manage change and embrace change with an understanding that change is a creative process that helps the company grow and flourish.
