Aussies have voted the Great Barrier Reef the best landmark in Australia in a recent survey conducted by online accommodation website Wotif.com.
The survey found that 63% of Australians deemed the Great Barrier Reef as Australia's best landmark. Iconic Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House came in second with 16% of votes.
Wotif Brands General Manager Megan Magill said 82% of all people surveyed have actually visited the landmark they nominated.
"It's nice to see so many Aussies still love to holiday at home. And why wouldn't they with one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World on our doorstep," Ms Magill said.
Interestingly Aussies would rather take colourful fish and coral over big city show-stoppers like the Opera House.
"The Great Barrier Reef was a clear front-runner in the survey, outshining big landmarks like the Harbour Bridge in Sydney as well as the 12 Apostles and Kakadu National Park by a long way."
Port Arthur in Tasmania, Lake Eyre in South Australia and the Bungle Bungles in Western Australia also featured on the list.
The Wotif.com Travel Insights Survey was conducted in February 2010 and looked at Australian travel habits.
