Calala Island Joins Small Luxury Hotels of the World

Calala Island, a privately-owned Nicaraguan oasis in the Caribbean Sea, has joined the ranks of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), the trusted and definitive collection of luxury boutique hotels worldwide.

Opened as a luxury resort in 2017, Calala Island has received numerous awards and is cited as one of the most exclusive private islands in the world, offering guests an island hideaway experience in an undiscovered part of the world with just four suites on the entire island - a feature that undoubtedly factored in during SLH's decision-making process to welcome the unique resort into its exclusive fold.

Kenan Simmons, Vice President of the Americas for Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) says, "SLH is delighted to welcome Calala Island to our hand-picked portfolio of luxury properties. We are excited to share this special place with guests seeking an intimate hideaway in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. Offering unique luxury experiences in an undiscovered location, Calala Island is truly a hidden gem."

The archipelago that plays host to this awe-inspiring resort is believed to have been first discovered in 1502 on Christopher Columbus's third voyage. Lying just off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, the area is one of the last remaining undiscovered jewels of the Caribbean.

Since opening, Calala Island has attracted several high-profile and celebrity guests seeking untouched paradise in the ultimate of private settings, with no-fly zones imposed at guests' request.

Calala Island is the vision of Tim Wickham, a British entrepreneur and self-professed Island Enthusiast, and his wife, Sarah, who now heads the Calala Foundation (an initiative that aims to give back to the communities and people of Pearl Lagoon). No effort or expense was spared in the development of the Island, whilst staying true to their dream of creating a luxury island hideaway in complete harmony with the untouched surroundings.

Dining on the Island is a gastronomic experience unmatched elsewhere in the Caribbean. Daily-changing menus using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients form the basis of exceptional cuisine, served in a variety of locations around the Island.

"The reputation SLH has is a perfect fit with our own unparalleled approach to barefoot luxury and service. Their acceptance process is incredibly selective, so becoming a partner is an honor," says Tim Wickham, owner of Calala Island.
