The UAE announced the appointment of Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama as the country’s first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence (AI), becoming the first nation with a government minister dedicated to AI, Ministers were also appointed for Advanced Sciences and Food Security as UAE looks to the future.

Al Olama, 27, previously served as the Managing Director of the World Government Summit in the Prime Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, and he holds degrees in Project Management and Excellence from the American University of Sharjah, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the American University of Dubai.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said: “We want the UAE to become the world’s most prepared country for artificial intelligence.

Just days prior to the announcement of this position, Sheikh Mohammed officially launched the UAE’s AI strategy, a major part of the UAE Centennial 2070 objectives that is also the first of its kind in the world. The initiative aims to improve government performance and create an innovative and highly-productive environment by means of investing in AI.

Speaking at an event following his appointment, Al-Olama said that the UAE is a key player in the development of the AI landscape, adding that advances in the sector will impact all areas of life. He also said that though the world today considers oil as a key driver of the global economy, as technological development and the fourth industrial revolution gather pace, AI will emerge as the main engine for development and progress.

He also said that the UAE uses AI to analyse data and help understand the future of our planet. Scientists need many years to analyse 10 GB of data while robots can do it in a few seconds, he noted.
