New Zealand attracted a record close to 3m number of visitors in 2013 but the number of Chinese tourists fell sharply in December, echoing a trend also recorded in Australia during that month.1

Chinese outbound tourism has been hit by the China Travel Law, introduced on October 1, which demands minimum tour standards, increasing tour costs by up to 30%.

Tourism NZ CEO Kevin Bowler said the 2013 visitor record was primarily driven by visitors from traditional long-stay markets and Australia.

1 - 2.7 million
