EU Hotel Prices

In comparison to December 2012, hotel prices in January have fluctuated by up to 38 per cent. The largest decreases can be found in Dresden (down 21 per cent to an average of £63 per night), Vienna (down 17 per cent to an average of £84 per night) and Salzburg (down 17 per cent to an average of £91 per night).

Dresden is a popular Christmas Market shopping destination, whilst Salzburg is renowned for its winter sports and Vienna for its New Year Eve's celebrations. It is likely these events caused hotel prices to rise during November and December.

The largest hotel price increases in comparison to December can be found in the German cities of Frankfurt (up 38 per cent to £106 per night), Cologne (up 25 per cent to £104 per night) and Munich (up 16 per cent to £110 per night).

Ski Destinations

In comparison to last month, hotel prices in some of Europe's most popular ski destinations have soared. Prices in Germany's Berchtesgaden, home of the luge World Cup in January, have increased by 61 per cent to an average of £177 per night. The most significant increase can be found in Austria's St.

Anton, which has increased by 80 per cent to an average of £276 per night. Other significant increases can be found in the French resorts of Courchevel (up 97 per cent to an average of £321 per night), Chamonix (up 34 per cent to £153 per night) and Val d'Isère (up 25 per cent to £250 per night).

UK Hotel Prices

Hotel prices in the UK have also fallen to their cheapest in two years. One night in January will cost an average of £77 for a standard double room, based on the 20 most popular UK cities on trivago. This is an £8 decrease compared to last month, when one night cost an average of £85.

The most significant decreases can be found in Brighton (down 16 per cent to an average of £76 per night), Cardiff (down 15 per cent to £69 per night), Edinburgh (down 12 per cent to £85 per night) and Manchester (also down 12 per cent to £86 per night).

Those wanting to visit the capital can find a bargain this month: prices in London have decreased by 14 per cent to an average of £130 per night.

The trivago hotel price index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for the most popular European cities on trivago. Prices for a standard double room are calculated on the basis of one million daily price inquiries for overnight hotel stays generated through the trivago hotel price comparison service. trivago stores all hotel requests for each month and therefore gives an overview of hotel accommodation prices for the upcoming month. The tHPI reflects the hotel prices within the European online hotel market: The overnight accommodation prices of over 100 online travel agents and hotel chains create the average hotel prices for cities, regions and countries within Europe.
