After last month's dramatic increase in hotel prices, figures have finally fallen across the UK and Europe.

An overnight stay in October will now cost an average of 99 pounds, compared to 105 pounds last month. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by trivago.co.uk.

UK hotel prices decrease

Last month saw hotel prices increase by up to 21 per cent in the UK's main cities. After the expensive Olympic summer, travellers this month will be glad to know UK hotel prices have finally dropped. In anticipation of the beginning of Autumn and colder weather, one night is on average £4 cheaper than last month.

Cities with the largest decreases in overnight accommodation are Brighton (down 15 per cent compared to last month), Edinburgh (down 13 per cent) and Dublin (also down 13 per cent). The cheapest cities are currently Blackpool (one night will cost an average of £64), Sheffield (on average £70 per night) and Birmingham (on average £74 per night).

October half term: UK

Those planning to stay in the UK during the October half term are in luck, as prices have decreased in comparison to last month. On average, UK hotel prices have decreased by 5 per cent, but larger savings can be found by looking at specific regions. Hotels in popular October half term destinations Cornwall, Dartmoor and the Lake District have all decreased  dramatically in comparison to September.

Hotel prices in Cornwall have decreased by an average of 15 per cent compared to last month. Newquay presents the cheapest option (on average £79 per night), in comparison to nearby Penzance (£85 per night) and Falmouth (£96 per night). Visitors to the Lake District may want to consider Kendal (on average £82 per night), which is on average 25 per cent cheaper than Windermere (£106 per night) or Keswick (£113 per night). Similarly, Plymouth (on average £67 per night) in the Dartmoor area is lower in price than Torquay (£73 per night) or Exeter (£83 per night).

EU hotel prices decrease

Similarly to the UK, hotel prices have decreased throughout the rest of Europe in comparison to September. The only city showing a notable increase is Madrid, where prices have increased by 18% to an average of £98 per night. On average, European hotel prices have decreased by 6% and are £6 cheaper than last month.

Compared to this time last year, hotel prices in Europe have decreased by an average of 7%. Most notable decreases include Geneva (down 18 per cent to an average of £200 per night) and Lisbon (down 10 per cent to £85 per night). Most notable increases are Brussels (17% increase to an average of £106 per night) and Paris (15% increase to £170 per night).

October half term: EU

Those planning to leave the UK this October half term for a city break may want to consider Berlin (down 23 per cent to an average of £82 per night), Vienna (down 11 per cent to £108 per night) or Copenhagen (also down 11 per cent to £112 per night).

Travellers hoping to escape the bad weather forecasted in the UK for some October sunshine may want to consider Greece, where prices have decreased by 16 per cent compared to last month to an average of £68 per night. Other cheap and warm destinations include Portugal (down 12 per cent from last month to £74 per night) and Cyprus (down 10 per cent to £94 per night).
