Creating Personal Success.
By Dr. Rick Johnson
Wednesday, 21st April 2010

Every manager, every employee and every leader that has any drive at all strive to be successful.

Success starts with self awareness. That means understanding your personal strengths and weaknesses. It also means having enough humility to work on those weaknesses.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans are preaching change in this year's presidential election. I only mention that because I really like the buzz words --- "Yes We Can" that have been used by both campaigns. You see, I believe that everyone can achieve success and realize their maximum potential. I make that statement in spite of the statistic published by several experts that claim only 20% of individuals today actually perform up to their own potential. I believe you can beat those odds.

However, the first thing you have to do is define what success really means to you. Once that is accomplished, follows these guidelines and success, which means getting what you want from life, will be much easier.
  • Realize when you reach bottom, get frustrated, and decide that you have had enough of not realizing or meeting your goals and objectives. Being impatient with your own performance will create a sense of urgency. You need a sense of urgency to light a fire in your belly.
  • Decide exactly what you want to accomplish and write it down. These are called goals. Create a success picture board that has visuals of what your personal success looks like. A big promotion, a new house, a new car, a luxurious vacation, whatever…
  • Document your success plan. What steps must you take?  In what order should  you take them? Who can help you, coach you or mentor you? Make them part of your plan.
  • Now --- execute your plan. Make adjustments as necessary. Communicate your goals and desires to others without being arrogant or cocky.
  • Have faith in your own ability. If you stumble or fall, get up and keep going. Never give up. Persistence alone can create success. Everybody has setbacks and failures. Learn from them. Don't use them as an excuse. Make a commitment to not have any pity parties.
Seek advice and input. Hang out and associate with only positive successful people. Don't let the naysayers discourage you.
