The quest for gender parity in the workforce might be the least understood obstacle facing business now.
To read recent press accounts, the battle for gender equality in the workplace has been all but won. In the U.S. and Europe, women comprise about 60% of university graduates.
Women make up 50% of the workforce in the US today and an even higher percentage among professional workers.
In the last recession, women also fared better at keeping their jobs than men. All this appears to be linked to growing brainpower needs in knowledge-based economies.
But these statistics mask a problem that companies have made little progress toward solving over the past decade: Women continue to drop out of the workforce in increasing numbers and many don't seem to find their way back ?even when they want to.
