8 Tips for Not Looking Old in Your Resume (Age Discrimination)
By Tom Sorensen
Tuesday, 20th June 2023

If you are older than 50 you may already have felt the pain, anger, and disappointment of being discriminated against because of your age.

In this blog are 8 easy-to-apply tips for not shooting yourself in the foot, because you suspect the world may be perceiving you as too old to hire.

What is age discrimination?

Age discrimination involves treating an applicant or employee less favorably because of his or her age.

In the US, the Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older.

The European Union has for 20 years a directive banning discrimination on the basis of age in employment and occupation. Discrimination on the basis of age is also prohibited under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) which bounds all member states of the Council of Europe.

At a national level in the EU, protection from age discrimination varies from one European country to another. Overall, despite the general intention to protect against age discrimination, in most countries, protection remains uneven and incomplete.
