Top 5 Trends of IoT in Hospitality

Even if you've never heard the phrase Internet of Things, or IoT, you're probably part of it: the term refers to all the devices nowadays that connect to the web — and sometimes gather and share data, too.

As such, everything from your car to your phone to your thermostat could be part of the IoT. Stunningly, Intel predicts the number of these smart objects in the world will reach 200 billion by 2020, so they'll be everywhere, even in your hotel.

On that note, just as the IoT has revolutionized home lives, it has also transformed the hotel industry. It's not a bad thing, either — these devices can help companies increase their productivity and revenue while decreasing operating costs. Plus, customers grow used to such comforts at home, so they appreciate seeing them in your hotel, too.

If you're looking to add some IoT into the mix at your hotel — or you want to make sure you cover the must-haves — here's where to start.

These are the top five web-wired tech trends in hospitality today.

1. Automated Guestrooms

This trend has to do with those home comforts we mentioned — guests want to check into your hotel and feel just as at ease as they do in their living room. Guestroom automation makes people feel welcomed into any space. Something as simple that lights that turn on as soon as the door opens will usher your customers right into their room.

Of course, automation often goes beyond the overhead lighting. Some hotels have managed to incorporate voice-activated controls that let visitors change the temperature, order towels and turn on music, all without lifting a finger. Angie Hospitality has a system through which customers can say, "Angie, I'm cold." With that, the automated system adjusts the room's temperature. On top of that, she speaks multiple languages, so customers of many nationalities can chat with her.

2. Engagement via Mobile

Guests don't necessarily look strictly online to find a hotel anymore. Instead, they flock to social media to gather ideas from location tags or influencer posts on Instagram. On that note, they don't communicate with hotels by phone all the time, either. They have social media at their fingertips, which allows them instant connections to their favorite travel apps, transportation companies and other brands. Some reach out to their accommodation via Twitter or Facebook to get a problem solved.

As such, part of the IoT has hotels connecting with customers on mobile more than ever before. Not only do they communicate via apps and social media platforms, but they also provide handy amenities via phones. For example, Hilton hotels allow guests to unlock doors with their phones only. Plus, they can check in with their cellphones.

3. Interfaces Incorporated Naturally

An IoT-minded hotel will feature well-integrated user interfaces. Again, this will probably require an expert's help. User-experience designers specialize in making websites and other platforms that are intuitive for people to use.

In most hotels, a natural user interface typically appears on the in-room TV — it's the focal point of the space, after all. Having such a landing screen can help guests learn about automation in the hotel. It can connect them with the front desk and other resources, too. If you don't want to put such a resource on the TV, you could put tablets in rooms or in the lobby to share similar information.

4. Better Online Branding

If guests use their computers and phones to find where they want to stay, hotels have to adapt to this trend. As such, many have taken the time to update their online offerings, whether they are apps, websites or both. On that note, hotels should figure out why they're a better option than the competitor and flaunt that through their online presence. Figure out how to differentiate yourself, both visually and details-wise, then make that the forefront of your online presence.

Not every hotelier is web-savvy, and that's understandable. Consultants can help hotels update their web presence, just as they can their in-person appearance. Find a creative company whose style matches the aesthetic of your accommodation, then work together to boost your online presence.

5. Personalized Room Setups

The IoT arms us with plenty of information about our guests — both future and former ones. For instance, a potential customer who has marked their Facebook relationship status as engaged might get ads for honeymoon locations, your hotel included. This type of targeting is likely to have more of an impact because it's personal, all thanks to the IoT.

You can apply similar principles to your guestrooms, too. When a guest comes to visit, a smart device will remember their preferences for next time. So, when they check in, they'll have the number of towels they need, the temperature they prefer and the TV set to their favorite channel. Best yet, your staff doesn't have to do anything but drop off the linens — the smart technology will do the rest.

Welcome to the IoT Hospitality Era

These are just five of the major IoT trends in hotels today. When it comes to smart tech in this industry, you almost can't go wrong. So, think about what would best serve your guests and incorporate that into your property. They're sure to appreciate the added convenience and comfort — and you'll love how life behind the scenes becomes a bit simpler with tech, too. In short, it's a win-win for you and your customers.
