On 7th April 2017, Haikou Meilan International Airport received its 5-Star Regional Airport Rating by Skytrax, the international air transport rating organisation, Haikou Meilan International Airport has now become the first Skytrax 5-Star Regional Airport in China and the 8th airport in the world with the Skytrax 5-Star Airport Rating.

Established in 1989 with its headquarter in London, UK, Skytrax is an international air transport rating organization dedicated to improving customer experience for airlines and airports across the world.

President of SKYTRAX, Edward, awarded the medal to the Chairman of the Board of Haikou Meilan International Airport, Wangzhen

The prestigious 5-Star Regional Airport Rating was introduced by Skytrax in 2016 to enable proper recognition of airports that predominantly focus on regional route operations. Whilst not global mega hubs, they are airports that deliver the highest quality services to their customers and meet the stringent 5-Star requirements.

In 2011, Haikou Airport introduced its service concept "Reaching Higher with Service Excellence" focusing on the continual improvement of passenger services by introducing, monitoring and refining standard operating procedures for all frontline service functions.

In parallel to enhancing the frontline service standards, several major construction projects have been undertaken. All these infrastructure projects aimed at visually expressing the unique tropical heritage of Hainan Island.

Introduction of new and better amenities have also contributed to a more relaxed and stress free dwell time at Haikou Airport.

Edward Plaisted of Skytrax commented, "We have over several years conducted audits at Haikou Airport and followed its significant and positive transformation. Haikou Airport staff has continuously been rated among the best of its peers. We are pleased to see that recent renovations of infrastructure and operational standards now enable Haikou Airport to deliver an excellent passenger experience at 5-Star level. We have confidence that Haikou Airport will continue to deliver a passenger experience which will meet and exceed the ever-increasing expectations of its passengers."

Haikou Airport is accessible by an efficient transport network and many modes of transport, which includes high-speed rail directly connecting the terminal with all major cities on Hainan Island.

Over the past few years, Haikou Airport has been keeping a healthy growth on passenger traffic, the airport closed the year 2016 with 18.8 million passenger traffic.

Addressing the question "How to create a more comfortable and exceptional terminal experience for every passenger?" Wang Zhen, Chairman of the Board of Haikou Airport said: "Mapping out the right path to better meet Haikou Airport's capacity requirements and rising passengers' expectations, we decided to carry out major expansion projects: a new international terminal, a new west wing terminal, and the building of Haikou Airport City. In addition to these new facilities, the old terminal building has been completely reconstructed and the airport access roads are expanded and improved. All these major projects combined with our well-trained and dedicated service staff have transformed the airport and uplifted the passenger experience.

Maintaining and improving customer service excellence at Haikou Airport remains our top priority as we continue to receive more and more passengers and airlines. We are immensely honoured to receive the Skytrax 5-Star Regional Airport rating. We see this prestigious rating as a recognition of the devotion of all airport staff which is a great motivation for us all to continue to ensure the best possible airport experience for all our passengers.
