JTB has forecasted that the number of Japanese travelers in 2025 is expected to increase by 2,9% year on year to 319 million in total, which consist of 305 million domestic travelers (up 2,7%) and 14 million overseas travelers (up 8,5%).
International visitors to Japan are estimated at 402 million, 8.9% more visitors than 2024, and more visitors than the forecast are expected depending on the visa deregulation for China.
Domestic travel expenses may rise
The average domestic travel expenses are estimated at 47,800 yen per traveler, 25.5% more than 2024 because of rise of prices, and the total domestic travel expenses may reach 14.6 trillion yen, 3.8% more than 2024 or 13.2% more than 2019.
On the contrary, the ratio of people who answered ‘no domestic travel plan’ was 25.4%, and the reasons were ‘no enough budget (35.4%),’ ‘higher travel expenses than expected (23.4%)’ and ‘no interest in traveling (14.6%.’
Higher intention to overseas travel is seen in young people in big cities
JTB has forecasted that the number of Japanese overseas travelers will not reach 20 million, the level of 2019, yet. The average overseas travel expenses are estimated at 334,100 yen, 40.9% more than 2019, and the total expenses are expected to increase by 15.2% year on year to 4.7 trillion yen.
