- “The Caribbean country is known globally for its product, service, and the security it offers tourists,” said Gloria Guevara, President & CEO, World Travel & Tourism Council
- 99 per cent of American tourists expressed interest in returning to the country in the future according tourist destination, according to the Ministry
Gloria Guevara, President & CEO, WTTC, highlighted that over 30 million tourists have visited the country over the last five years, according to government data, demonstrating the nation’s popularity and commitment to providing the best experiences for its visitors.
The Travel & Tourism sector is vital to the Dominican Republic’s economy and the livelihoods of its citizens, accounting for 17.2% of GDP and 16.0% of employment last year. In 2018, tourists collectively spent almost USD $8 billion on the island, representing 39.1% of exports.
WTTC data shows that last year the top inbound markets for the Dominican Republic were the USA (36%), Canada (13%), Germany (4%), France (4%) and Spain (3%), with leisure tourism dominating overall activity (92% vs 8% for business travel). International spending comprises three-quarters of the overall tourism spend in the Dominican, making inbound markets crucial to the sector’s performance and longevity.
Guevara expressed that the tragic events in which a number of American citizens sadly lost their lives, and that the corresponding authorities are investigating, should cause lasting damage to the Dominican Republic, nor should it detract from the excellent tourism offer of the country.
She also noted that the local hotel association and authorities have worked to clarify this matter and expressed hope that the cause of death of the travellers will soon be understood.
