No Sex Please, We're Getting Divorced
The Wrap @ The Transit Cafe
Tuesday, 8th September 2009

Getting a divorce? Go on holiday and don't worry, you can just sleep through it; it may save your marriage.

Some people might argue that going on a holiday together might actually cause a couple to break up, but one Indian tour operator is hoping that his kind of holidays will keep couples together.

Mumbai-based KV Tours and Travels has launched "divorce tourism" packages for warring couples – the idea is for them to not consult lawyers and instead use the money to go off on a holiday with a relationship counselor in tow.

To pay the holiday bill, Vijesh Thakker is targeting family members who want the couple to stay together.

"We're trying to send them where they have not been before, where there are not many people – and no relatives," he said in an AFP report.

Vijesh, whose other purpose is to help tackle rising divorce rates in India, came up with the idea after seeing a friend go through a divorce 18 months ago. "We're not destiny changers," he said. "We want them to treat the trip like a second honeymoon."

However if Vijesh is counting on sex to keep these couples together, a holiday might not be the right thing for them, according to the latest survey by Westin Hotels & Resorts and the National Sleep Foundation (NSF).

The survey, which polled 12,500 frequent travellers from 10 different countries, found out that 51% prefer a perfect night's sleep to great sex, compared with 31% of those asked the same question 10 years ago.

In eight of the 10 other countries surveyed, rest beat sex. Only in Canada did a good bedroom romp beat out a good bedroom slumber. And, according to the results, some gender-myth busting is in order: Men were more likely than women to choose sleep over sex, while most women reported they prefer sex.

The culprits to blame for this lack of interest in sex were "24/7 lifestyles", attachment to technology and constant connectivity.

Nearly half (42%) would rather find a sleeping pill on their pillow in place of a chocolate when staying in a hotel.
And 62% take a relaxant or an over-the-counter or prescription sleep or stress medication while traveling overnight.

Well, if even Heavenly Beds cannot tempt couples to have their romps, what hope have we got for couples on the brink of breaking up?

But there is hope yet. According to the Sleep Well site there are 10 reasons why sleep is better than sex.

1. You don't feel guilty about doing it alone.
2. No one will start rumours about how much you sleep.
3. You won't complain in the morning about not getting any.
4. You don't have to pay for sleep.
5. You don't need to sleep after sleeping.
6. Sleep can last a good eight hours. (or even more)
7. You can sleep in church.
8. While sleeping, you can have sex with anyone you want.
9. Your teddy bear never complains.

And of course....

10. It's legal to sleep in any position whichever country you live in.
