Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist at 4Hoteliers.comAccording to HR guru, John Sullivan, though chatbots have been used in recruiting for over 10 years, they are just coming into common use among employers now.

Chatbots are on-page dialogue boxes that may be used by visitors to websites to get answers to their questions.

In the case of commercial websites, the chatbots are used to get information about products or policies or even account information. According to Gartner Research, within the next three years, the average person will have more conversations with bots than with their spouse.

Raising the level of conversation

Used in recruiting, chatbots are a way of raising the conversation and upgrading the candidate experience. But the key is to maximize the return on investment by buying the system that best fits your budget while enhancing your candidate experience.

Benefits of using chatbots

The overarching benefit is that chatbots create more informed candidates. But the value does not stop there. There are three additional benefits of using chatbots.

First, employers will enjoy higher quality applicants, because top performers often ask more questions and want more information before completing an application.

By having easy access to those answers, employers will have an advantage. Second, employers will end up with fewer unqualified applicants, because those who are not qualified will self-select out. Imagine the time savings for both recruiters and hiring managers?

Delivering a better candidate experience

Almost 80 percent of candidates believe job postings do not provide enough information. Providing access to that information improves candidates’ perceptions of how they are being treated in the recruiting process.

What’s coming

Very soon, employers will be able to buy a chatbot in a box. Employers will be able to plug in their own information and the bot will deliver the information to applicants 24/7.

Whether employers choose a basic, human-assisted, or artificial-intelligence-powered chatbot, this technology is likely to remain a part of the recruiting landscape for the foreseeable future.

Moreover, the use of chatbots is only the beginning. As we move into the future, expect to see chatbots will be applied to many transactional HR processes, including providing information on benefits programs.
