The tourism in Germany is booming: last year the number of overnight stays increased by 4.5 percent to nearly 72 million; the growth is mainly promoted by guests from foreign countries. The need of new hotel beds is enormous.
According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the worldwide leading provider of global b2b hotel data, currently 412 new hotels are in the pipeline. With 30 hotel construction projects Berlin is the leading city followed by Hamburg (29 new hotels planned).
German cities with the most hotel new building projects:Berlin is the hot spot for hotel investments in Germany. According to estimates by Willy Weiland the number of new construction projects could increase to 40. The number of overnight stays will increase from currently 27 million per year to about 40 million in 2020, according to general expectations.
The need of new, modern hotel beds will further grow. The capital currently has 132,600 hotel beds in 786 accommodations. The average occupancy rate increased last year to 56.4 percent and therefore was higher than the last 25 years. In total the tourism sector obtains a revenue of about eleven billion Euro per year.
Hamburg counts as second boom location for new hotels. With about nine percent more overnight stays than in the past year, more and more investors are interested in the attractive city location. Promoters of tourism are the increasing number of cruise travellers and the musical theatres. Hamburg is the third most important musical location after New York City and London.
The importance is emphasized by the "export" of the stage musical "Rocky" to the Big Apple. Besides the three existing musical theatres of Stage Entertainment (currently playing "The Lion King", "Rocky" and "Tarzan") further two large stages will be added in the next years. Since early December the musical classic "The Phantom of the Opera" is playing at the Stage theatre "Neue Flora".
Due to the increasing international airport the hotel market Frankfurt/Main has an „important growth potential". Especially the boom of flight passengers – about 58 million annual – will lead to more hotel overnight stays, a current study states.
Reasons are the additional capacity by the forth landing strip since 2011 as well as the increasing number of jumbo jets such as the Airbus A380.
