The company partners with Management Hospitality Group (MHG) to drive the repositioning of the country’s hotel sector.
- The first property, under the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand and located in Mahdia, will open this year with 307 rooms
Meliá Hotels International strengthens its position in the Mediterranean with the announcement of its official entry into Tunisia. Through a strategic alliance with Management Hospitality Group (MHG), the company will operate five new properties that will gradually join its portfolio, with the ambitious goal of reaching 3,000 rooms in the destination by 2030.
This expansion begins this year with the opening of a resort operating under the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand in Mahdia. The property will offer 307 rooms and is located in one of the country's most exclusive coastal areas. Following this first opening, the growth plan includes the addition of four further hotels between 2027 and 2029 in the key destinations of Tabarka, Monastir, Djerba and Tunis City.
Designed mainly as resorts and tailored to different traveller profiles, these projects will help elevate the country's hospitality standards and bring an enhanced holiday experience to the destination through the Sol, Meliá Hotels & Resorts and Gran Meliá brands.
A strategic partner with local DNA
For this market entry, Meliá is relying on the strength of Management Hospitality Group (MHG), a platform specialised in the development, management and operation of hotel assets in Mediterranean tourism destinations, particularly in North Africa, which is part of a joint venture between AllianceOne Group and Voyages 2000.
This strategic alliance combines the company's global expertise with MHG's deep knowledge of the Tunisian market and its well-established operational network in distribution and tour operations, creating strong synergies that enhance commercial capabilities, unlock new opportunities, and contribute to the sustainable development and positioning of the destination.
The collaboration model is based on repositioning existing assets through strategic investments that will bring the hotels up to the international standards of Meliá Hotels International and its brands. This will optimise profitability and enhance their appeal to key international source markets, especially in Europe.
According to Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International: “Our entry into Tunisia marks a strategic step in Meliá Hotels International's growth across the Mediterranean and North Africa. We believe in destinations with strong potential for transformation, where we can contribute our expertise in hotel repositioning. Together with first-class partners such as MHG, we aim to support the development of a tourism offering with greater added value, aligned with evolving trends in quality, sustainability and destination diversification."
Meliá Hotels International enters Tunisia at a moment of structural growth for the country's tourism sector, which already welcomes more than 11 million visitors annually and is moving towards a more diversified and quality-oriented model. With its arrival in the destination, the company strengthens its growth strategy across the Mediterranean leisure axis and reaffirms its commitment to sustainable tourism development and long-term value creation through strategic partnerships and efficient management models.
