I Burned the Symbols of Success
By Aurelio Giraudo
Thursday, 10th September 2026

The ties were silk, the shoes were handmade and for many years, they represented achievement, authority and belonging.

So I burned them.

Not because I have lost respect for elegance. Hospitality taught me that presentation matters. A polished shoe, a well-chosen tie and a perfectly prepared lobby can create a powerful first impression.

But first impressions are not leadership.

After decades managing luxury hotels across different countries and cultures, I have learned that titles, offices, uniforms and expensive possessions can easily become substitutes for substance.

A tie cannot earn the trust of a team.

A pair of fine shoes cannot take you closer to your colleagues unless you are prepared to walk beside them.

A tailored suit cannot hide weak decisions, poor standards or a lack of courage.

True luxury is also misunderstood. It is not simply marble, chandeliers, designer labels or high prices. Luxury is remembering a guest’s name. It is noticing a problem before the guest needs to mention it. It is creating an environment where people feel respected, protected and genuinely welcomed.

The same principle applies to leadership.

Leadership is not what we wear. It is what remains when the symbols are removed.

It is being present during difficult moments. It is accepting responsibility when results fall short. It is making unpopular decisions when they are necessary. It is developing people who may one day become better leaders than we are.

The fire in this photograph is symbolic. It represents the willingness to let go of habits, assumptions and definitions of success that no longer serve us.

Experience is valuable, but only when it keeps evolving. The day we believe that our position, reputation or past achievements make us untouchable is the day we stop leading.

I still appreciate a beautiful suit and excellent shoes. But I no longer confuse them with success.

Success is the team that grows under your leadership.

It is the guest who returns because of how your people made them feel.

It is the business that becomes stronger because you were prepared to challenge the familiar.

And sometimes, moving forward requires us to burn the version of ourselves that everyone has already accepted.

What would you be prepared to leave behind to become a better leader?
