Big boats, big budgets and big adventures: Super yachts are luxury floating private villas.

Historically the global super yacht industry revolves around American and European high net worth owners spending most of their time on board their floating palaces in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, but with the continued relaxing of international protocols, immigration and sea borders within Southeast Asia (ASEAN) and the growing number of regional high net worth millionaires and billionaires, Southeast Asia is fast becoming the next super yacht haven of the world.

In Thailand, Phuket’s four marina owners and the island’s marine services companies are lobbying the government to relax some of the archaic Thai laws to allow foreign-flagged super yachts to charter in Thai waters â€" for a yearly license fee.

Phuket has long been recognized as the Southeast Asia ‘hub’ for cruising super yachts.

The exponential growth of super yachts visiting the Southeast Asia region is creating insatiable demand for highly trained crew to cater to the discerning requirements of the wealthiest jet-set on the planet.

Millennials and even some Gen X and Baby-boomers are enticed to look for work as crew on cruising super yachts.

It’s easy to see why: Free travel, free food and board that means every dollar earned can be saved and the chance to meet some wealthy and influential individuals.

How to start a career as super yacht crew?

It’s all about being trained correctly in advance. Super yacht maritime crew training academies offer entry-level courses for deckhands, stewardesses and cooks and then find them jobs on board at completion.

Accredited Safety Training is mandatory before crew can be considered for work on board. International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented stringent safety training requirements for super yacht crew.

Basic Safety Training for Crew and Watch Keepers (STCW10) is a mandatory 5-Day course covering firefighting, first aid, survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibility and security awareness.

Galileo Maritime Academy in Phuket is accredited by the United Kingdom’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and offers complete entry-level crew training and placement.

Current Galileo Course Fees: ( including full board accommodation )

  • One day courses ( PDSD, Crowd Management, First Aid etc ) =  Euro    300
  • STCW 2010 course - all 5 elements                        ( 5.5 days ) =  Euro 1,540
  • Basic steward/ess, deckhand, yacht chef courses  ( 10  days ) =  Euro 2,800
  • Combined Basic course + STCW                            ( 15  days ) =  Euro 4,200
  • Advanced level chief stew, deck leader, yacht chef (  21 days ) =  Euro 5,880
