JLL’s Hotels & Hospitality Group has conducted an annual survey of the major Australian accommodation owners and operators for more than a decade.
Information is collated at the end of each calendar year and the consolidated results relating to the top ten owners and operators are reported to the industry.
1.1 Australia’s accommodation supply
Australia’s accommodation supply was relatively stable in 2014 showing a decrease of -0.2% (-418 rooms) over the year.Â
Despite this slight decline, supply levels are actually the second highest on record, just behind those of the 2013 peak.Â
The supply growth trend is anticipated to continue over the coming years as major projects are completed in the short to medium term within Sydney (Crown Hotel at Barangaroo and the Sydney Convention Centre Hotel), Melbourne (Aloft Hotel, Hotel Windsor extension and the Queensbridge Tower), Brisbane (40 Elizabeth Street and the W Hotel) and Perth (Elizabeth Quay and Westin Hotel, AVANI Hotel, and Crown Burswood).
Australia had 229,646 accommodation rooms at the end of June 2014 (according to latest tourist accommodation ABS statistics) as shown in the table following.
Serviced apartment room supply has increased by 0.9% y-o-y with the addition of 534 keys. This compares to reduction of -0.3% (-294 rooms) in the hotel sector and -0.8% decline in motel rooms (-658 rooms).
