This year, more than 36 million holidaymakers will jet out of the UK and it seems many are not prepared for the day to day costs they will face when they are abroad. During their last holiday, over half (55%) spent more on food than anticipated with almost a third (30%) blowing more money than expected on nights out.
British holidaymakers are also hitting their wallets before they've even boarded their plane with one in five saying they overspent on airport shopping.
Brits budget £247 each on holidayMore than a quarter of British holidaymakers plan to set aside more cash this year compared to last, budgeting £247 per adult and £149 per child for holiday spending money. For the average family of four, that amounts to almost £800 for a one week holiday. Younger parents, aged under 25, spend more on their kids and less on themselves than any other age group, setting aside just £211 each for themselves but budgeting £152 per child.
Eighteen to 25 year olds are also more likely than any other to overspend with half admitting to going over budget during their last holiday and 36% overspent by as much as £200 a week. This age group is also most likely to get carried away with the cash before they've even boarded their plane: 38% admit to blowing the budget in the airport shops.
Skyscanner's Victoria Bailie comments, "With so many British holidaymakers spending more than they intended during their last holiday, money management clearly goes out of the window as soon as travellers reach the airport. In-resort costs differ from one destination to another so it can be worthwhile researching these costs before jetting off. However with many people spending more than they budget, it would seem British holidaymakers are far from thrifty when having fun in the sun."
