The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 868 hotels totalling 140,952 rooms, according to the October 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

4Hoteliers Image LibraryYear to date in Europe, 283 hotels have opened with 35,324 rooms. In the remainder of 2012, 69 more hotels are expected to open in the region with 9,904 rooms. The most rooms are expected to open in the unaffiliated segment (18 hotels with 2,448 rooms), followed by the Upper Upscale segment (nine hotels with 1,927 rooms) and the Luxury segment (seven hotels with 1,444 rooms).

In 2013, 281 new hotels are expected to open in Europe with 45,353 rooms. The Upscale segment plans to open the most rooms with  9,789 rooms in 64 hotels. Two other segments are expected to add more than 6,000 rooms in 2013: the Upper Midscale segment (49 hotels with 8,857 rooms) and the Upper Upscale segment (38 hotels with 8,139 rooms).

The region is expected to add 246 hotels in 2014 with 43,132 rooms.

Asia/Pac pipeline for October 

The Asia/Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,697 hotels totalling 374,523 rooms, according to the October 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the region’s markets, New Delhi, India, reported the largest expected room growth (+42.1 percent) if all the rooms in the total active pipeline were to open (11,056 rooms). Four other markets reported more than 20-percent expected room growth: Manila, Philippines (+34.8 percent with 7,486 rooms); Bali, Indonesia (+24.3 percent with 8,595 rooms); Mumbai, India (+22.5 percent with 4,456 rooms); and Jakarta, Indonesia (+21.4 percent with 6,702 rooms).

MEA pipeline for October

The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 488 hotels totalling 121,026 rooms, according to the October 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upper Upscale segment accounted for the largest portion of rooms in the total active pipeline with 32.3 percent and 39,048 rooms. Three other segments each accounted for more than 15 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline: Upscale segment (19.6 percent with 23,743 rooms); the Luxury segment (19.1 percent with 23,091 rooms) and the Unaffiliated segment (18.8 percent with 22,705 rooms).

Three segments each made up more than 20 percent of rooms under construction: the Upper Upscale segment (32.3 percent with 22,472 rooms); the Luxury segment (23.5 percent with 16,355 rooms); and the Upscale segment (21.2 percent with 14,732 rooms).

STR: Caribbean/Mexico pipeline for October

The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 124 hotels totaling 19,318 rooms, according to the October 2012 STR Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the countries in the region, Mexico reported the most rooms under construction with 2,627 rooms. Three other countries reported more than 500 rooms in the In Construction phase: Bahamas (2,250 rooms); Dominican Republic (1,613 rooms); and Puerto Rico (651 rooms).

C./S. America pipeline for October

The Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 233 hotels totalling 33,396 rooms, according to the October 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the markets in the region, Panama City, Panama, reported the largest number of rooms in the total active pipeline with 3,312 rooms. Four other markets ended the month with more than 500 rooms in the total active pipeline: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1,888 rooms); Bogota, Colombia (905 rooms); Lima, Peru (793 rooms); and Santiago, Chile (758 rooms).
