Russia: Weak ruble, 'time to visit Russia'.

Russian tourism officials are hoping the weak ruble draws more visitors to the world’s largest country;

After a disastrous season last year " 10,000 tourists were stranded in Russia in 2014 after their tour operators went bankrupt, according to data tracker Euromonitor International " Moscow is launching 'Time to Visit Russia' in a bid to boost its hospitality industry.

A key factor in the campaign is the weak ruble, which has lost half its value against the United States since the start of 2014 amid the plummeting price of oil and Western sanctions.

That makes Russian hotels, restaurants and other attractions less expansive for foreign visitors.

“The only place cheaper is home," said Moscow Tourism and Hotel Industry Committee Chairman Sergei Spilko at the ITB Berlin Convention this week.

Seeking to draw travelers to destinations outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the campaign will push tourism in the destinations like the Golden Ring of “open air museum” cities northeast of Moscow that feature architecture and monasteries dating from the 12th to 18th centuries.

Other highlighted destinations include Siberian gateway city of Yekaterinburg and the natural beauty of the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia’s Pacific Far East.

Sergei Korneev, vice president of the Russian Tourism Association, said “Time to Visit Russia” would also seek to maintain interest in Sochi, venue for the 2014 Olympics. The association has had some success drawing guests to the city on the Black Sea, he said. In 2018, Sochi will be a host city for the FIFA World Cup, too.

“After an event like the Winter Olympics the city needs to pick itself up again,” said Korneev. “This year was a test run. We had lots of visitors from China.”
