The Year In NYC Dining: Hottest Restaurants, Trends & More.
By Kelly Dobkin
Wednesday, 31st December 2014

2014 was another fast-paced year for the NYC restaurant scene; there were major comebacks, a proliferation of indoor food halls, an explosion of fried chicken spots, and more big-name closings due to Manhattan's ever-rising rents.

Here, we take a look back at the biggest openings, closings and trends of the past 12 months.

Hottest Restaurants

French food continued to be a recurring theme in 2014, but this year "French cuisine" meant many different things to different chefs.

Dirty French, the swaggering Ludlow Hotel opening from the Torrisi crew proffers top-notch throwbacks like trout meunière and duck à 'l'orange in a clublike setting; Brooklyn's French Louie (from the Buttermilk Channel folks) nodded to all French enclaves including New Orleans and Montreal; and insta-hit Claudette explores the flavors of Provence with a hint of North African influence at the hand of chef Koren Grieveson.

Keith McNally replaced Pulino's with Cherche Midi, which updates old-fashioned dishes like frogs' legs and elevates bistro-friendly fare like salad niçoise and skate meunière, while also plating up a buzzy prime-rib burger.

But some of this year's biggest openings don't follow any trends at all. Bobby Flay, who lost Mesa Grill earlier this year and hadn't opened a major NYC eatery in nearly a decade, roared back with Gato, a ballsy Bolo 2.0 serving up crowd- and critic-pleasing plates of roasted octopus, paella and spicy shrimp.

Danny Meyer's Marta, helmed by Maialino chef Nick Anderer, elevated Roman-style pizza for the NYC crowd. Also on the Italian front, the old Peels space saw the opening of Andrew Carmellini's Bar Primi, which quickly became a see-and-be-seen destination despite its carb-heavy menu.

Enrique Olvera's Cosme was the first U.S. restaurant for the Mexico City star chef behind Pujol and snagged considerable buzz for its playful elevation of Mexican cuisine in dishes like the duck carnitas and the husk meringue; Stephen Starr and chef Justin Smilie's Upland is an homage to "California" cuisine, and they're not talking about Chinese chicken salad. Smilie's diverse talents shines in dishes like the estrella pasta with chicken livers, the Japanese mackerel, the 'nduja pizza and the crackling pork chop.

John Fraser's Narcissa, opened last winter, continued the dialogue of veggie-forward cuisine (rotisserie beets, carrots Wellington) by using products direct from owner/hotelier Andre Balazs' upstate farm. On the more casual front, the 100-year-old Russ & Daughters opened their first-ever sit down restaurant with Russ & Daughters Cafe this summer.

In Brooklyn, Dover was the much anticipated follow-up to Carroll Garden's Battersby and the cozy Emilybrought Roberta's-style wood-fired pizza to Clinton Hill.
