Challenge to flight-cancellation fees advances.

Cracking down on an airline’s flight-cancellation fees, the European Court of Justice ruled that pricing freedom does not preclude Germany from enforcing its consumer-protection laws.

A federal consumer-protection agency in Germany brought the underlying challenge in 2010 against Air Berlin, taking issue with a term in the airline’s general terms and conditions that makes passengers responsible for a 25 euro handling fee if they seek reimbursement for any canceled or otherwise missed flight booked at an economy rate.

Canada is shaping up for the future.

After Donald Trump got elected president of the United States last November, the Google search 'Move to Canada' was done in record numbers; In fact, the idea of relocating to the United States’ northern neighbor became so prevalent, that a columnist for one of the nation’s largest daily newspapers, The Washington Post, wrote a piece detailing just how difficult it was for US citizens to pick up and relocate across the northern border.

Rethinking capex expenditures.

When the hotel industry is in record breaking mode, a funny thing typically happens, expense creep typically kicks into overdrive, salaries go up, brands demand more upgrades, and customer expectations soar. When the bottom dropped out of the hotel market in 2008, those expenses conspired against hoteliers, driving losses to levels so great it cost people their businesses.

So, the industry is getting smarter. They’re looking for ways to reduce top line expenses now to prepare for the inevitable; the loss of pricing power in coming years.
